the guide to tipping.
this is all so true::
The next time your out eating at a resturant, look at your server. Do you think they are really happy to be doing that job? The answer is no, they are not, but its what we do, and we do it for the money so please help them out. Its a tougher job than you think and you should pay them accordingly! This is for everybody who goes to a restaurant and has ever footed the bill. There are so many people out there flooding the restaurants w/o any knowledge of how to tip. Here is a short guide for the general public to follow. Feel free to print out and store in your wallet and/or purse.1. If you are not a child and get something from the kids menu (which we DO NOT have to do), tip as if you received an adult meal and leave the server an extra $1 @ least!2. If you have children, DO NOT let them, open and dump anything on the table (ie; salt, sugar, etc). IF YOU DO, you must leave an extra $5 for the server to clean up YOUR CHILD'S mess & to restock the now unusable wasted items. We are neither their babysitter nor their parent. The least you can do is pay us for the extra work. Also make sure you control your kids and don't let them scream or run around the restraunt. It's very distracting not to mention dangerous if they get ran over by a server with hot food in their hands.3. If you feel the necessity to stay for longer than 15 minutes after you pay, its an extra $3 every 30 minutes. We make our money from the tables. If you are in one and we can't seat it, we don't make money.4. Telling a server they are the best server they've ever had is not a tip. If we are good, let us know by leaving us more money. We cant pay our bills on compliments. Its not that we don't appreciate the praise, its just that if you say that and then leave 10% it's an insult.5. Prayer cards and any other religious pamphlet are NOT tips. It is insulting that you assume we are w/o religion and must save us. Again, like ..4, we cant pay bills w/prayer cards. We'd go to church on Sundays if it wasn't mandatory to work on Sundays because EVERYONE who goes to church follows it by eating out. Also don't try to preach to us while we are working. We don't go to your work and put you down so don't do it to us.6. P.S. We know that you have just given money to God, but Sundays are not discounted tip day. 10% = NOT a good tip.7. It is not 1960. Cost of living has gone up dramatically since then. 18% is the MINIMUM amount of what you should be tipping your servers. Just look at the tax line and multiple by 2-3, this gives you your minimum tip amount. Remember, our companies pay us minimum wage (minumum wage for servers is $2.13 in OK.) And we are taxed on 10 percent of your meal automatically anyway. So if you don't leave a tip, we end up paying for your meal.8. Say what you mean: plain means nothing on it. If you get a (ex.) burger plain and we bring it that way, dont treat us like idiots because it doesn't have ketchup & mustard. What you order is what we bring. We are not mind readers. If we were, we wouldn't be working in a restaurant.9. Do not take your bad day (or past experience) out on us. It is not our fault. We don't take our bad customers out on you. Its only fair you do the same for us.10. If the prices go up or the restaurant start charging for things that used to be free, do not take it out us. We do not make these decisions. We don't even want to enforce them because we know that it will end up hurting our already low tip in the end. Unfortunately our bosses have no problem taking the $ out of our tips if they see us give you something for free. They will never say anything to you because you're the customer, so its on us.11. If you get a discount because of your food was prepared wrong or something, do not take it out of our tip. We didn't cook it. The cooks get paid hourly regardless if the food sucks. However, we only make what you give us. Also, if the manager gives you a discount because of this, you tip off the ORIGINAL total, not the discounted one. Also, if you use a coupon, you tip based on what the total was before the discount people. Remember, we have pay tip out to the hosts, bussers, and bartenders on the original amout of every tab, so if you don't tip, we LOSE money.12. Holidays for us don't exist. Example: If you are eating at our restraunt on a holiday like Thanksgiving and you wish us a happy Thanksgiving, do you honestly think we are having a good Thanksgiving. No, we are stuck at work because it is mandatory for us to be there serving you lazy people, who don't want to cook, instead of being at home with your families. So be a little more thoughtful when tipping because we are stuck there working and no we do NOT get paid overtime.13. If you come into the restraunt 10 mins before closing or any time near closing hurry up and order your food and get out. Closed means closed, not social hour. It is so rude to sit there and take your sweet ass time. We can't leave until you leave because we have to do sidework and clean the table you are sitting at. We don't want to stand there waiting for you for an extra hour just because you don't want to go home. We recommend 24 hour establishments such as Denny's or IHOP if you wish to sit into the wee hours of the night.14. If you only come in for coffee or a dessert, to do paper work, or to have a meeting, don't sit there taking up our booths for hours. We are not Starbucks or a hotel restraunt. If you want to sit for hours, go there or else you better leave a good tip for us and camping fee included.15. When we come up to the table to greet you and we ask how you are doing please let us know. We honestly want to know how you are doing. If you are in a bad mood we want to know that from the beginning. A confused stare or complete silence does not suffice as a reply to "How are you doing?". Also don't interrupt our greeting and say "I want coffee", "can we get some bread, or "what are the soups?" This is not only rude, but it makes it hard for any server to want to come back to a table.16. Refrain from talking on your cell phone, especially when your server is trying to take your order. This is one of the rudest things you could do. It is not hard to set your cell phone down for a minute and order. Wasting our time and money by making us wait is extremely rude. If you must be on your cell, at least keep your voice down in respect for other customers. Just show some respect and give us your attention for a couple of minutes. 17. Always remember to tip the take-out order servers! They work just as hard as a server, and hardly ever get tips for it! They deserver your respect too.SERVERS READING THIS: Please repost this so the word can get out, since so many people are uneducated about tips and our lives depend on this - atleast for now......signed,all your fabulous servers out there, all the cooks who care if you get your food right because it's a pride thing, AND because they want to see their friends who serve make money, and all the managers who actually care if their servers make money or who where once servers themselves.

how to tip and why

“this is all so true:”
NO, it is ALL NOT SO TRUE, just SOME OF THIS POST IS TRUE!
“1. If you are not a child and get something from the kids menu (which we DO NOT have to do), tip as if you received an adult meal and leave the server an extra $1 @ least!”
Usually, my mother for instance orders the chicken tenders from the kid’s menu, BUT, DOES get CHARGED MORE. Also, the price of the item SHOULD NOT BE THE SOLE BASIS ON HOW MUCH TIP SHOULD BE GIVEN. I just tipped $2.50 on a $9 and something cent check. I based my tip as a STARTER with the percentage, but I didn’t go off of that, because I had great service, so I gave more. Do you understand that the PRICE of something shouldn’t be the ENTIRE reason you give a certain amount for a tip?
“2. If you have children, DO NOT let them, open and dump anything on the table (ie; salt, sugar, etc). IF YOU DO, you must leave an extra $5 for the server to clean up YOUR CHILD'S mess & to restock the now unusable wasted items. We are neither their babysitter nor their parent.”
I DO help the server by pilling up the dishes and wiping up the table, but I don’t agree to tip extra if I was the type of person that didn’t do that. I feel that’s the SERVER’S or BUSSER’S JOB, NOT mine. I do clean up after myself just because I don’t like a mess at our table when I’m eating, but it’s NOT the CUSTOMER’S job to clean their mess up. I am NOT sure WHY you think it’s OUR job as customers to clean up our messes? I do clean up the mess, because I really rather not have clutter at our table, but I feel the people that leave their server a mess SHOULDN’T feel it’s “THEIR” job to clean their own messes. Do you litter? If you do, you are contradicting your own rule! The server is getting PAID to clean the mess by their EMPLOYER. Would you rather have 15% instead of 20%, because I DID YOUR JOB BUSSING MY TABLE FOR YOU? I DIDN’T THINK SO. It’s NOT the customer’s job to do ANY cleaning what-so-ever. Just like you said, “The least you can do is pay us for the extra work”, well, if you feel that way, WHY DON’T YOU LET US CUSTOMERS LET YOU DO THE EXTRA WORK WHILE WE ARE THERE* SO YOU CAN MAKE 20% instead of 15%, instead of expecting us to clean it up, so when we leave, you don’t have to clean up? You want to make more, right? WHY tell us to keep the table clean then? You want us to pay extra, well don’t tell us to clean up the mess, because it’s NOT OUR JOB TO DO THAT as customers, it’s NOT and you KNOW IT! WHY PAY YOU EXTRA MONEY SO I CAN DO PART OF YOUR JOB? WOULDN’T YOU RATHER HAVE 25% instead of 20%? LET CUSTOMERS NOT CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT 25% instead of that 20%. WOULDN’T YOU RATHER MAKE MORE MONEY INSTEAD OF EXPECTING CUSTOMERS TO DO YOUR JOB, SO YOU CAN MAKE LESS MONEY? I thought the goal was to make the MOST MONEY you can? HOW will you do that if you tell us to do *PART OF YOUR JOB*? That would mean a lower tip. WHY WOULDN’T YOU RATHER JUST DO MORE WORK TO MAKE MORE MONEY? ARE YOU THAT LAZY TO EARN YOUR MONEY? If I would leave a mess, I still wouldn’t consider the clean up work at ALL in part of my tip, but SOME PEOPLE would is what I am saying. If you want them to clean up, WHY should you get a huge tip then for not doing YOUR JOB? WORK IS WORK and that is EXACTLY what it really is. You can’t expect something for nothing you know. At the same time though, you can’t expect people to care about a mess that will be cleaned up AFTER they have left. I know I don’t give a shit about that and I NEVER count it towards the tip. Clean up work is NOT part of my service unless it is truly in my way, that I would view it as a “SERVICE” I want and care about.
As far as restocking goes, that’s side work that IS NOT at all part of service to the customer. Restocking is just SIDE WORK! That’s why partly you are getting $2.13/hr. The employer is paying you to do things and not just do nothing, because we customers are paying the rest of your wages. We customers are paying for the *SERVICE* you provide US, NOT the side work you are providing the RESTAURANT. Especially things the customer doesn’t even use like if they don’t use the salt shaker, then HOW CAN YOU CALL FILLING UP THE SALT SHAKER BACK UP THAT WAS SPILLED BY A KID AT THE TABLE SERVICE TO ME? It’s a service to the RESTAURANT, NOT ME. I didn’t use that salt, so I am not *BENEFITTING* from you filling it up after I’ve left or filling it up even I did use some of it, you end up filling it up AFTER I’ve left which that is NOT part of *MY* service, it’s the restaurant’s service ONLY! ONLY if you were to fill it up while I was STILL THERE and USED the product would you being doing a service for ME and the restaurant as well.
“The least you can do is pay us for the extra work.”
NO, cleaning up is just that, clean up work AFTER we have left. It’s NOT *SERVICE* to the customer! Service is when we are actually DINING there. I REFUSE to tip for work that I don’t even receive. SO WHAT if you have to clean up a lot mess after I have left. That’s partly why you get the $2.13/hr for. YOUR EMPLOYER PAYS FOR YOU TO CLEAN THE MESS AFTER I LEAVE! I also could care less if they pick up my dishes during my meal unless it is a really small table that I need the room, otherwise, if it’s a big table, WHO the fuck CARES if my plates and glasses stay at my table after I have paid? I want my requests as SOON as POSSIBLE! I DON’T CARE if you take my plates and honestly would MUCH RATHER you get my requests FASTER instead. I could literally care less about the dishes, because you aren’t SERVING me when you pick up those plates, because you are doing something that COULD LITERALLY BE DONE AFTER I HAVE LEFT. Honestly, bussing the table and picking up dishes after I’m GONE IS NOT AT ALL PART OF MY SERVICE, because I’m NOT there anymore. It’s actually just service to the RESTAURANT ONLY! SO WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER SOMETHING THAT I DON’T GET IN *MY* SERVICE IN PART OF YOUR TIP? TIPS ARE FOR THE *SERVICE* I RECEIVE, NOT AFTER I LEAVE, BECAUSE THAT IS NOT PART OF MY SERVICE IF I AM NOT THERE ANYMORE? WHY TIP ANY MORE FOR SERVICE I AM NOT RECEIVING? I don’t care what you do AFTER I’ve left, I mean REALLY, WHO GIVES A FUCK! Like anyone actually CARES if you have a big mess to clean up. Get real you know.
“It's very distracting not to mention dangerous if they get ran over by a server with hot food in their hands.”
I COMPLETELY AGREE! Parents need to hold their kid down if they want to run around like a chicken with their head cut off. If the kids are causing a danger to others, then YES, they should be controlled. The parents need to teach their kids to BEHAVE!
“3. If you feel the necessity to stay for longer than 15 minutes after you pay, its an extra $3 every 30 minutes. We make our money from the tables. If you are in one and we can't seat it, we don't make money.”
That’s pretty SELFISH of you! There’s NO REASON to pay an extra $3 or a PENNY MORE for NO MORE SERVICE, NONE! NO MORE SERVICE=NO MORE TIP! TIPS stands for TO INSURE PROPER SERVICE. Do you understand what the word "SERVICE” means? TIPS ARE FOR SERVICE, BUT IF THERE ISN'T MORE SERVICE, WHY SHOULD I TIP FOR NO MORE SERVICE? If I am there just sipping my drink, I've paid, and you aren't coming to the table anymore, WHY the hell should I TIP you MORE for *NO MORE WORK?* IS THAT REALLY FAIR FOR A CUSTOMER TO TIP FOR NO WORK JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE SITTING LONGER? Tips aren’t for just sitting at a table and they NEVER have been just for that. Customers have EVERY RIGHT as long as the manager says it's ok for them to stay as LONG as they please. NO CUSTOMER IS *RENTING* the space, so we DON'T OWE the server ANYTHING for staying longer! NO SERVICE DOES EQUAL NO TIP! Why would people pay for no more service? Doesn’t that sound a bit stupid and selfish to you?
All you care about is "TURNING THE TABLE" to make more money for YOURSELF, NOT about if customers are enjoying themselves dining out. Sure, I feel it's rude ONLY to the other customers that would like to get seated sooner to end up sitting for hours when it would be busy, but it’s NOT inconsiderate to the server. The customers have EVERY RIGHT to do dine as LONG as they wish unless the manager tells them they have to leave. I DO NOT AGREE AT ALL that customers OWE you more money. IT IS NOT INCONSIDERATE to the server, because why in the world should ANYONE consider the server not making tips from other customers? Like customers really think about that, I mean for real. That’s RUDE of the server to act like customers have to tip more for NO MORE SERVICE. It's SELFISH and it's RIDICULOUS for NO MORE WORK. Just because I'm there longer, doesn't mean I am *RENTING* my space to have to pay you more. THAT'S SELFISH OF YOU TO SAY SUCH A THING!
“4. Telling a server they are the best server they've ever had is not a tip. If we are good, let us know by leaving us more money. We cant pay our bills on compliments. Its not that we don't appreciate the praise, its just that if you say that and then leave 10% it's an insult.”
I AGREE with this one. A compliment without any money DOESN’T show gratitude, but MONEY DOES!
“5. Prayer cards and any other religious pamphlet are NOT tips. It is insulting that you assume we are w/o religion and must save us.”
I AGREE with this one. Pamphlets are NOT a tip, PERIOD! What a cheap asshole!
“6. P.S. We know that you have just given money to God, but Sundays are not discounted tip day. 10% = NOT a good tip.”
I agree with this one too! Just because it’s a certain day, doesn’t mean ANYTHING!
“7. It is not 1960. Cost of living has gone up dramatically since then. 18% is the MINIMUM amount of what you should be tipping your servers.”
That’s IF the service meets almost PERFECTION. If you print the ticket wrong and bring me the wrong food, well, that ISN’T 18% tip worthy. Otherwise if I pay you 18% now, then the next time I’ll have you, you won’t CARE if you get my order right, because you will already know I had tipped BEFORE when my order was wrong, so you won’t even TRY to get it right. I’m NOT going to set myself up to have HORRIBLE service. You learn MORE if someone gives you a crummy tip when YOU KNOW the mistakes you made. It’s just COMMON SENSE if you bring someone’s food wrong, that they are going to be at least a little upset about it. I get PISSED off when my order is completely wrong and so do a LOT of people.
“8. Say what you mean: plain means nothing on it. If you get a (ex.) burger plain and we bring it that way, dont treat us like idiots because it doesn't have ketchup & mustard. What you order is what we bring. We are not mind readers. If we were, we wouldn't be working in a restaurant.”
I AGREE 100%! I am VERY SPECIFIC by stating “ONLY” this, this, and this.
“9. Do not take your bad day (or past experience) out on us. It is not our fault. We don't take our bad customers out on you. Its only fair you do the same for us.”
I AGREE 100%!
“10. If the prices go up or the restaurant starts charging for things that used to be free, do not take it out us. We do not make these decisions. We don't even want to enforce them because we know that it will end up hurting our already low tip in the end. Unfortunately our bosses have no problem taking the $ out of our tips if they see us give you something for free. They will never say anything to you because you're the customer, so its on us.”
I AGREE 100%! You also should assume that the customer may base their tip on the higher price, so when a coupon is used for a couple of dollars off, you should assume they will tip based on the lower price, since you get tipped on the higher price when the prices go higher, TO BE FAIR! Otherwise, the server would ALWAYS win and there wouldn’t be much of a point to the coupon if now my $2 coupon is worth only $1.60 off.
"Unfortunately our bosses have no problem taking the $ out of our tips if they see us give you something for free."
You SHOULDN'T be giving ANYTHING for free then and just let the MANAGER handle giving free stuff.
“11. If you get a discount because of your food was prepared wrong or something, do not take it out of our tip. We didn't cook it. The cooks get paid hourly regardless if the food sucks. However, we only make what you give us.”
I HATE that attitude of “WE DIDN’T COOK IT!” The “WE DIDN’T COOK IT” DOESN’T mean you pressed the correct button. I’ve had a server ADMIT to me he pressed the WRONG BUTTON and obviously he didn’t do part of his job which was to REREAD my order he wrote down as well as COMPARED the plate of food to my written order BEFORE he brought it to the table. He brought me out quesadillas instead of what I ordered which was bbq chicken nachos(it’s an appetizer, but I ordered it as my entrée). So the cooks AREN’T *ALWAYS* at fault. With that type of attitude, you should get ZERO for not acting like it’s *EVER* the servers fault, which sometimes CAN BE! If I’ve asked for a side of ranch with my meal and you bring my meal without it, YOU’RE AT FAULT for NOT NOTICING IT IN THE KITCHEN. Same thing with a wrong side, like if I ordered beans and you bring me rice, well, YOU took my order, so YOU should take the EFFORT to make SURE I have what I ordered as far as what you can SEE.

“Never, ever take food out that is incorrectly done (I had a waitress rip me a new one for something I goofed up on as a cook and she demanded I fix it then and there - and she was right and I learned). Explain about and apologize for the delay.”
Basically, this is a cook that had a VERY SMART waitress tell the cook basically that: “YOU MADE A MISTAKE, FIX IT BEFORE I BRING OUT THE FOOD WRONG.” So it’s NOT ALWAYS the cook that prepared the food wrong if you took the order and bring out the order wrong. It’s the LAST PERSON who sees the food as long as the ticket was printed correctly as far as if it’s a food runner and if it’s the same server, the same server should compare what they wrote down to the plate of food BEFORE taking it to the customer wrong. I am NOT talking about pickles or burrito fillings that the server CAN’T see without touching the food. I am ONLY talking about things the server can actually SEE is wrong with the food or missing.
“Also, if the manager gives you a discount because of this, you tip off the ORIGINAL total, not the discounted one.”
If the mistake was the SERVER’S fault for printing the ticket incorrectly, HELL NO am I going to base my tip on the “ORIGINAL TOTAL” UNLESS THE SERVER PROFUSELY APOLOGIZES AND GETS THE MANAGER FOR ME WITHOUT ME HAVING TO ASK, BECAUSE IT WOULD BE THEIR MISTAKE, SO THEY SHOULD BE THE ONE TO RECTIFY IT AS NICELY AS THEY CAN! You expect customers to tip on higher prices when prices go up due to inflation, so if it’s YOUR FAULT that I got a discount, I will base my tip on “HOW YOU HANDLED THE SITUATION” and “HOW MUCH WAS DISCOUNTED.” If the entire bill was discounted, then I would base my tip on how you handled the situation for the most part. Like did you apologize and get the manager for me, or did I have to call a manager over myself before I left. In other words, I give a chance to the server to get a manager, but if I have asked for the check already and the server STILL hasn’t gotten the manager for THEIR mistake such as a completely wrong entrée due to printing the ticket incorrectly, they will get NOTHING for their tip, because they weren’t be very caring about my bad experience. Show you care, and I will care back with a decent tip. Show you don’t give a shit, and I’ll do the SAME back. It’s KARMA, what goes around, comes around! Mistakes happen, but be nice and apologetic. Act as if *YOU* were that customer that got their wrong entrée and how YOU would FEEL. Wouldn’t you be a bit annoyed at least?
A few months ago a waiter that took our appetizer order when my husband and I ordered our drinks, FORGOT to put the appetizer order into the computer. We were waiting a while and asked him about our appetizer. It turns out he NEVER PRINTED THE TICKET because he claimed he FORGOT to put the order in, meaning it was *HIS* FAULT we waited a LONG TIME for an appetizer, NOT THE COOK'S AT ALL. We waited literally a half an hour, which that is the amount of time we should have been receiving our entrees. Anyway, he not only profusely apologized and admitted fault completely, but he offered us something for free. I told him I’d rather have something off the bill, than more food, because it would have been too much food. He got the manager to give us $5 off the check. I based my tip on the ORIGINAL AMOUNT ONLY, because he was VERY CARING and EXTREMELY NICE. MOST servers don’t say they’re sorry, much less get the manager to give the customer something for free, because they truly did feel bad they fucked up. We gave him a tad over 16% tip. I wasn’t going to tip 20%, because he made a HUGE mistake that costed us OUR TIME and I DON’T want this to happen EVER AGAIN. If I paid him 20%, he would keep forgetting to put in orders. I don’t want that type of service just to get $5 free, because it AIN’T WORTH IT. I go out to eat to enjoy myself, NOT have huge mistakes happen, so I end up being pissed off.
“Also, if you use a coupon, you tip based on what the total was before the discount people. Remember, we have pay tip out to the hosts, bussers, and bartenders on the original amount of every tab, so if you don't tip, we LOSE money.”
A coupon for x amount of dollars off is just a LOWERED price set by the OWNER. So, I don't agree if let's say I have a $4.00 off coupon for 2 dinner entrees that I should tip on the amount before the discount because it didn't take ANY MORE work to bring me that food, it just happens to COST LESS. So, let's say my husband and I order the same entree which is worth $16.99 each on the menu, but with the coupon, each entree is $14.99. So the server will STILL GET a tip for bringing us the food, taking our order, and ringing it up. I tip AFTER a discount such as that. If the food is free like a free appetizer coupon, then I would tip as if I wouldn't have it for free because the server DOES do MORE WORK to take my order, bring me the entree, and ring up the entree. There is NO MORE WORK involved as far as what the customer requests. It's NOT the customer's fault that a coupon has to be shown to the manager before ringing it up. That has NOTHING to do with the customer's service. That is a policy that the MANAGER or OWNER set up. So I feel that with a coupon such as x amount of dollars off an entree as long as it's NOT FREE, tip on the DISCOUNTED amount. The server didn't do ANYMORE or ANY LESS work for that entree as far as the customer's requests goes. As far as the server having to get the manager to see the coupon, this has NOTHING to do with the customer's service, NOTHING! If managers were smart, they'd let the servers take off the discount WITHOUT having to go get the manager. This wastes time for EVERYONE in the restaurant. I tip on "MY" service, NOT for things I can't control. Those customers that have discounts may not be there to begin with WITHOUT the discounts. So why don't you think about that? The more customers, the MORE TIPS you can make.
ONLY if the item ends up being free would the server be doing MORE WORK. That is the TRUTH. If an item is for FREE completely, then I feel the tip should be based on the amount BEFORE the discount, because the server DID SERVE me the free item, which would be serving me for free, but to just have a couple of dollars off an entrée doesn’t mean they are bringing me the item for free, because they are going to get SOME tip from it.
Think about the HOW MUCH WORK DID YOU DO FOR YOUR TIP? The prices are lowered by the OWNER, so just because you think we owe you more because the original price was only $2 more, doesn’t mean you did ANY MORE WORK for the money and you didn’t do less work either. Just because the food is more expensive, doesn’t mean you did the SAME AMOUNT OF WORK. For instance: I order a pasta entrée that is $10.99 “AS IS” from the menu. I order a cheeseburger($6.99) medium well with lettuce and extra onions only. 2 sides of mayo, 1 side of mustard and 1 side of ranch. Now, honestly, which one was MORE WORK to give me? THE CHEESEBURGER WAS MORE WORK AND IT WAS *LESS* expensive. Shouldn’t a server deserve MORE MONEY for doing MORE WORK INSTEAD OF LESS WORK? WHY do you think that the *PRICE* should be the COMPLETE thing that decides the tip? It takes MORE TIME to put the cheeseburger order into the computer as well as more things to bring to the table. Also, 90% of the time, my condiments are forgotten about, so the server has an EXTRA TRIP to get them to me, which is MORE WORK.
Also, you expect people to tip HIGHER when the prices go higher, so WHY NOT BE FAIR and tip HIGHER when the prices go higher due to inflation and LOWER when the prices are lowered to be FAIR as long as the item is NOT FREE? At a Chili’s location, the baby back ribs went from $13.99 to $14.49. Now, we all tip for that entrée based on $14.49. Is that FAIR for it ALWAYS to be in the SERVER’S FAVOR? Absolutely NOT! So BE FAIR and let us tip on the entrée that is just $2 less like at Red Lobster. It took *JUST AS MUCH WORK* to bring that entrée to me at $14.99 as it did to bring that same entrée to me at the menu price that is $16.99. The PRICE SHOULDN’T BE THE SOLE DECIDER OF THE TIP!
“12. So be a little more thoughtful when tipping because we are stuck there working and no we do NOT get paid overtime.”
I DON'T agree. I feel just because you are working on a holiday, doesn't mean the tip should be *ANY* higher. Doctors, police, fire fighters ALL WORK ON HOLIDAYS. Does that mean they get paid MORE? MORE THAN LIKELY NO! So just because you are a waitress doesn't mean you should get more because of "WHAT DAY IT IS". WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SERVICE? I can get just as bad service on a holiday and MORE THAN LIKELY WORSE service, because it's MUCH more busy than any regular day normally. What day it is doesn't count for SQUAT! If you don't like working on holidays, get an OFFICE JOB or some type of job like that. Be a receptionist or something. MOST office jobs DO HAVE HOLIDAYS OFF. I can't say all, but MOST do. Work at a bank even. They'll FOR SURE HAVE FEDERAL HOLIDAYS OFF, which INCLUDE THANKSGIVING! DON’T make it OUR PROBLEM YOU HAVE TO WORK!
I tip according to the SERVICE, NOT WHAT FUCKING DAY IT IS! THAT'S RIDICULOUS! If my entree is delivered to me wrong, my meal is JUST AS RUINED as if it wasn't a holiday. WHAT DOES WHAT DAY IT IS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH TIPPING?
“13. If you come into the restraunt 10 mins before closing or any time near closing hurry up and order your food and get out. Closed means closed, not social hour.”
I AGREE with this one. People that come in close to closing time shouldn’t even be seated and it is rather rude to have the server have to work well over their shift, because some people want to dine late. I do think that’s very INCONSIDERATE of people to come right before closing time. I completely agree when a restaurant is CLOSED, they are CLOSED!
“14. If you only come in for coffee or a dessert, to do paper work, or to have a meeting, don't sit there taking up our booths for hours. We are not Starbucks or a hotel restraunt. If you want to sit for hours, go there or else you better leave a good tip for us and camping fee included.”
There is NO “CAMPING FEE”, because we customers AREN’T *RENTING* the space. SO NO, NO CAMPING FEE is necessary or should be expected, PERIOD! However, I think it’s rude of the customer to sit for hours if they aren’t eating or drinking, because another customer could have been seated at that table. So I ONLY think it’s inconsiderate to other customers, NOT inconsiderate to the wait staff at all. WHY THE HELL SHOULD ANY CUSTOMER CARE about if you turn and burn the table faster or not to make more tips? Customers are out to have a nice time. They are NOT there to worry about if YOU aren’t making more tips from them. Like they give a rat’s ass about HOW MUCH money you make, I mean really. I know I certainly don’t think about if I spend extra time drinking my drink that I owe the server money if they aren’t actually SERVING me anymore, I mean REALLY. YOU ARE SELFISH, SELFISH, SELFISH, ONLY THINKING OF YOUR INCOME, BUT NOT ABOUT PEOPLE’S DINING EXPERIENCES!
That’s pretty SELFISH of you! There’s NO REASON to pay ANY EXTRA for NO MORE SERVICE, NONE!
“15. When we come up to the table to greet you and we ask how you are doing please let us know. We honestly want to know how you are doing. If you are in a bad mood we want to know that from the beginning. A confused stare or complete silence does not suffice as a reply to "How are you doing?". Also don't interrupt our greeting and say "I want coffee", "can we get some bread, or "what are the soups?" This is not only rude, but it makes it hard for any server to want to come back to a table.”
People want to just order, especially if they waited an hour or more for a table. WHY delay them from ordering for a long greeting? Just ask what they want to drink whether it’s required or not, because if they are interrupting you, you are just WASTING TIME FOR EVERYONE YOU SERVE, NOT JUST THEM as well as it’s not like you are going to up sell them anything if they already have made up their mind. I know I HATE it when a server has to make chit-chat before we order. I am fine if they want to chit-chat with me AFTER the server has put in our food and drink orders, but don’t delay customer’s foods to tell us the daily specials or ask how we are doing. I’d hate be required to waste people’s time that AREN’T INTERESTED. You may think the customer is a bitch, but hearing greeting crap is a WASTE. Honestly, people don’t want to know the specials MOST of the time. If I want to know the specials, I’ll *ASK* instead of you waste my time. If I want to know your name, I’ll ASK. I wished that a server would just say “May I start y’all off with something to drink.” NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS, just simply ASK us what we want, instead of SUGGESTING THINGS. YOU DESERVE TO BE INTERRUPTED, because you WASTING PEOPLE’S TIME, so *YOU* are a being RUDE to the CUSTOMER. Don’t you see that? I DON’T care what your name is. I’ll find out when the check comes if I either want to request you again or make sure I avoid you like the plaque for giving me shitty service. I don’t remember the server’s name when they introduce themselves, because I am looking at the menu and concentrating on knowing what I want to order.

“Most of you would prefer your waiters to be servers, not buddies. “I really don’t care what my waiter’s name is,” sniffs Chula Vista’s Olin Bjorsky. “I am not interested in what dishes the waiters and waitresses like,” says La Jolla’s Patricia Winter.”
Basically, people DON’T want to chat with the wait staff, so when that someone attempts to order their drink, *YOU* are the one WASTING the CUSTOMER’S TIME!* For real you know, like I really give a shit what your name is or what the specials are. It’s rude to interrupt you, I’ll AGREE with that, BUT, if someone tells you what they want to drink, the customer isn’t listening to what you are saying anyway or cares what you are saying so WHY shouldn’t you be able to recognize that the customer just wants to order and let the customer order like they want to whether or not it’s required?

“I'm also with you on chatty waiters, no thanks, I'm not there to be charmed.
I waited tables for over a year, so while I know it's hard, mostly honest work, I also know when the service sucks.”

"And I hate waiters who want to be a part of my dining experience. If I wanted to spend time with the waiter, I would dine with him. My idea of a good waiter is one who never asks if I need more water or tea or coffee--he simply sees when I need more and shows up to take care of it."

"Doug from New Mexico is not in the restaurant industry, but is a customer. He said when he brings a date to a nice restaurant, sometimes the server is very chatty. He really wants the dinner to be nice and romantic, but the server is very intrusive. He wants to point out the fact that he is not there to visit the server, but to spend money on good service and good food."
Just look at ALL THESE people that DON’T WANT TO CHAT WITH THE SERVER! People want to dine with the people they are WITH! Sounds like almost a “SILENT” type of service MOST people want.
“16. Just show some respect and give us your attention for a couple of minutes.”
I AGREE with this one. Cell phone users at restaurants are VERY rude to take up their conversation at the server’s time expense as well as the tips they could be making, because the customer is keeping them from serving other people. Those customers are also being very rude to other customers, because the LONGER they talk on the cell phone, the longer they stay at the table or take more time to order.
“17. Always remember to tip the take-out order servers! They work just as hard as a server, and hardly ever get tips for it! They deserver your respect too.”
That is BS that they work “JUST AS HARD”! If that was the case, fast food places(excluding Sonic Drive) would ACCEPT tips and it would be a NORMAL PART of going to eat at a fast food place. Also, servers that do table service only would be pretty mad to know that servers that do COUNTER service aren’t working NEARLY as hard to be receiving the tips that they are getting and they are doing WAY THE HELL MORE WORK WITH THEIR TABLE SERVICE, but may get close to the same amount or less. I’d be pissed off to know that bagging someone’s food was just tipped 15%, but my table service I would have just provided that was MUCH MORE WORK was ONLY tipped 10%. YOU KNOW IT’S WAY MORE WORK TO GIVE TABLE SERVICE THAN TO GIVE A TO-GO ORDER TO SOMEONE! Don’t give me that crap about “THEY WORKED JUST AS HARD”, because it’s BULL SHIT! BAGGING MY THINGS IS NOT VERY HARD WORK. Serving me at a table is! YOU KNOW THAT’S THE TRUTH, otherwise fast food employee’s(excluding Sonic Drive-in) would get tips too.
When Wendy's people fix 3 cokes and put a hamburger combo in a bag with ketchups and napkins, NOBODY tips them, so WHY tip for 3 cokes at Chili's plus one entree to-go that I go inside to pick up? At Applebee's, the utensils are in a bag along WITH a napkin, so there's LESS work there to put that into the bag than a fast food employee has to do.

Look at this website. Look at ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT DON’T TIP FOR TAKE-OUT.
BottomFeeder said “There's no point in doing so since all this person did was wrap up my food that someone else made for me, and that's it.”
Kaiser said “Tipping on take-out? Why, because you carried the styrofoam containers from the kitchen and bagged them for me?”
SDscooby said “Agreed, I don't tip on take-out. That’s just ridiculous.”
Incorporeal said “I don’t tip for takeout, I tip about 20% + when I eat in though.”
Hunter S. Thompson said “And no I don't tip if I get take out. If someone delivers it then I will.”
Stitkacik said "Takeout = no tip."
nhluhr said "This means no tips for Takeout."
Eric Anderson said "And I NEVER do for takeout."
Look at ALL THESE PEOPLE that AGREE that tipping for take-out is STUPID if you actually go inside the place to pick it up. If I get it delivered to my car or get pizza delivered then I will tip 15%, NO more than that though. Also, I will NOT tip at ALL if they can't get the order correct. Like I have gotten delivered a pizza and they actually charge for extra cheese sauces at Papa John's. NONE of the 5 cheese sauces were delivered quite a number of times. If the delivery drivers can't DOUBLE CHECK the box BEFORE handing it to me, FUCK THEM! Same thing goes for take-out that is delivered to my car. If I have ordered fries as a side and you have in my bag "beans", well you won't be getting a tip for bringing me the WRONG food that I have to WAIT LONGER for in the car for because you were TOO DAMN LAZY TO DOUBLE CHECK THE BAG. The food HAS to be correct for me to tip at Sonic Drive-in. I have stiffed people at Sonic if the food is WRONG. I even bought a gift card a few months ago at Chili’s and someone ahead of me in line was getting some food to-go worth almost $20 worth. I saw her pay with a $20 bill and her put back *ALL* the change in her purse. I thought to myself *WAY TO GO GIRL!* People at fast food places(excluding Sonic Drive-in) and TAKE OUT SERVERS do the following:
1. They give me napkins.
2. They give me ketchups or syrups or butters, or jellies or whatever condiments.
3. They put the item in a bag.
4. They ring up the item and give people change.
5. They fill a cup with ice and soft drink or whatever drink like tea.
Can you tell me WHY should I tip for the SAME AMOUNT of SERVICE that we all NEVER tip for at a fast food place(NOT including Sonic) just because it happens to be a "SIT DOWN" restaurant? At KFC for instance, I’ve gotten a 6 piece meal with sides. They put my plastic utensils and napkins. They put it into a bag and they took the order. I’ve even seen the CASHIER get some of the food like she got a thong for the biscuits and put them in HERSELF in the box, meaning, SHE BOXED food for NO TIP at all. Isn’t that the SAME EXACT THING that a sit-down restaurant to-go employees do? I am NOT talking about people that get car-side-to-go. Bringing me my food to my car IS service to tip for, but me getting out of my car to pick it up inside the restaurant ISN’T service to tip for, because it’s just like picking up McDonald’s, which is called “COUNTER SERVICE.” COUNTER SERVICE, IS JUST THAT, COUNTER SERVICE LIKE FAST FOOD PLACES(EXCLUDING SONIC DRIVE-IN OBVIOUSLY)!
I will repeat it again in a little different way incase if you don’t understand how STUPID and RIDICULOUS it is to tip for take-out.
The take-out servers and fast food servers(excluding Sonic Drive-in) do the following:
1. Bag my stuff.
2. Put me napkins and utensils.
3. Put any condiments in a bag.
4. Ring the order up initially.
5. Put money in register when customer gets there.
What's to tip for here? FAST FOOD PEOPLE DO THE SAME EXACT THINGS? Do you truly know of a difference? A phone called order is just like if I was standing telling the cashier what I wanted. It's just a DIFFERENT way of taking an order down. KFC workers do more work. The utensils are separate from napkins. Applebee's has it all-in-one little bag with a napkin, fork, knife, and salt & pepper packets also. A KFC worker that TOOK MY ORDER AND RUNG IT UP AS WELL got chicken and biscuits to put into the boxes. She even put the sides in the containers. Those employees don't get tips, so WHY tip for LESS WORK at Applebee's? That's just plain STUPID and VERY UNFAIR!
WHY tip for service that we don't ALL TIP FOR when we order at fast food places? THAT is NOT FAIR to tip for a take-out entree at Chili's, but NOT for a combo at McDonald's. When I order hotcakes and sausage at McDonald's, the cashiers get me butters, syrups, knives, forks, and jelly for my sausage. They bag it too and ring me up as well just like a to-go server. Do they get a tip for that? I think NOT! Is that truly *FAIR* if I don’t tip them, but I tip a Chili’s employee for my to-go entrée? HELL NO, IT’S NOT and fast food workers may end up doing even MORE WORK than that Chili’s employee for no tip at all. That’s just NOT FAIR, it really ISN’T! WHY wouldn’t you want to be FAIR TO EVERYBODY in the world and tip when for the *AMOUNT OF WORK* that is being done and COMPARE it to what we don’t tip for? It’s just not right to tip for one pasta entrée with the bag of utenils and napkin(all-in-one), but not to tip for a McDonald’s combo that the server has to fill a glass, bag the food, and give condiments like mayo if it is requested. THAT’S MORE WORK than that ONE pasta entree, but they NEVER get tipped.
